Another Swimmer Lawsuit? No Shock Here!

Published by Suz under Oh Snap!

It seems like every few months there a lawsuit filed on behalf of a swimmer against some triflin former sponsor that just couldn’t get their shit together.

We’ve seen it with Kaitlin Sandeno, Aaron Peirsol, and Mark Spitz. And now it’s Amanda Beard’s turn.

Olympic gold medalist swimmer Amanda Beard claims GoDaddy.com breached a 2008 settlement agreement in which the Web host company agreed to stop using her name and image. In the suit filed in Superior Court, Beard said the December 2008 agreement terminated a previous contract she had with GoDaddy.

Tsk, tsk, tsk, Go Daddy. Be prepared to feel the stiff arm of justice!

Speaking of GoDaddy, though, I think I need to renew some domains I have registered there. Not this one, though!

Britta Steffen = Hypocrite

I’m sorry. I just have to say something about this.

A couple of days ago Britta Steffen bettered Libby Trickett’s 100 Free WR. She set the new mark in one of the controversial super suits and had the following words to say afterwards:

“I’m feeling in good shape but this suit is of a different world. This is a really weird piece of equipment, one that I’ve never worn before. You don’t die in the last metres and you feel no pain. Under normal circumstances, this suit should be forbidden, and I expect that by 2010 it will be. I felt like a speedboat in water and never in my life would I have believed that a human could glide like that.”

Then, last night I read a new story about the repercussions of FINA’s swimsuit decisions and saw this:

Germany’s double Olympic champion Britta Steffen set a world record in the 100 metres freestyle Thursday, but predicted it would not last long and complained that futuristic swimsuits are damaging the sport.

Wait. There’s more…

Steffen said the record would last only until the world championships in Rome starting next month, and lamented the impact of high-tech swimsuits even though hers benefitted her on Thursday. “This development is a shame for the sport — where will it all stop?” Steffen said.

Is she effing kidding me? How is she going to benefit from the suit technology, set a freakin’ World Record, and then turn around and complain about what suits like hers is doing to the sport? If she cared that much about the sport perhaps she wouldn’t have swam her race in said suit in the first place!

Hypocrisy at its finest, folks.

Sorry for yet another rant, but I just couldn’t let this one pass me by without speaking up.

Trials Return to Omaha, Swim Aids Disappointed

I know, 2 posts in one day. Don’t get too spoiled. This won’t last! Also, please be forewarned, this is mostly a rant post!

We knew Olympic trials were headed back to Omaha, but now it’s official, as the deal has been signed.

The Swim Aids are not fans of the city of Omaha. I’m not sure we should even truly refer to it as a “city” because it is far from what I consider one.

I can see why, from the athlete’s POV, Omaha would be a great place for a major team selection competition. There’s absolutely nothing to do! Very little distractions = focused swimmers. I get that. But for the rest of us, zzzzzzzzzzzzz. What a snoozefest! I was expecting Omaha to be like Indy in terms of a downtown. There are a million things to do and restaurants that don’t close at 5PM. You don’t need a car in downtown Indy, you do in Omaha. Well, if you want to occupy your time doing anything anyway. Continue Reading »

ESPN Fail

Published by Suz under Press Screw-Ups, Swim Chicks Rule!

I moseyed on over to the ESPN sub-site to cast my vote for all the swimmers nominated for ESPY Awards. (You should too.)

When I got to the “Best Female College Athlete” category, I was pleased to see Dana Vollmer nominated. What didn’t please me was that they used a picture of Lacey Nymeyer. ESPN FTL!

Note: We know we have some explaining to do re: our attendance at the Santa Clara Grand Prix. That is a post for another day!
