Cool Things Going On in Charlotte This Weekend!

Charlotte UltraSwimIn addition to what will likely be some fast in-season swimming, swimming fans in the Charlotte area will also be treated to some non-swimming events this weekend.

This morning, in conjunction with UltraSwim, a small selection of National Team swimmers got a taste of Nascar action at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Here’s some more info:

On Thursday, Olympic medalists Gary Hall, Jr., Mark Gangloff and Maritza Correia will join Olympic hopefuls Mary DeScenza and Cullen Jones for the “race” of their lives as the group experiences speeds up to 175 mph at the famous Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The group will enjoy a private tour of the track, before strapping in for a special “ride-along” around the NASCAR track. The visit was arranged by Lowe’s Motor Speedway, which extended the invitation through MAC. In addition to the day at the track, swimmers and fans alike can catch a little race-fever as the Michael Waltrip Toyota will be on display at the MCAC through the weekend (Thurs.-Sun.), courtesy of Toyota.

Charlotte Mayor Patrick McCrory has proclaimed June 10-16 as “Make a Splash Water Safety Week” in Charlotte. Before tomorrow’s finals, Mayor Pro Tem Susan Burgess will make the announcement and will recognize water safety hero and Charlotte resident Rodney Sellars as Charlotte’s Make a Splash local hero.

I like this general direction. Partnering some outside activities with swim meets increases the excitement for the meet and hopefully draws more fans in. Although some of us are ok with it, it’s nice to have options for your free time when you travel to or attend meets. This all probably would have been more effective had this been promoted more than 3 days before the meet began though. Minor details?
