Hayley Peirsol Retires From Swimming

Posted October 9, 2007 at 7:48 pm by Suz in Swimming Worldwide

So, we have our answer now; thanks to someone close to the situation

A year plus of scorching best times and breakout performances seems to not have been enough to keep the younger Peirsol sibling in the sport.

A year-round sport like swimming takes up so much of your time and energy. So in order to stay active in the international ranks, an athlete’s committment has to be rock solid. When that doesn’t happen, changes must be made. Guess this is what happened with Hayley.

She has decided to leave the sport and finish her degree at Auburn. We wish her all the best!

That is really a shock to me. At the same time though, I really admire her for leaving the sport on her terms. I will always remember her victories of the summer or 2006 and her walk around the deck after medaling at World Championships this last spring. I wish Hayley all the best in her post competitive swimming life. And hey, she is young, she can always come back if she misses it!

Thanks Suz for the update on Haley. I was wondering why she was not at Nationals. I thought maybe she took the summer off after the World Championships. She had a good shot at 08. I wish her the BEST.

That’s a shame. I was looking forward to seeing her in Beijing. At least she’s retiring on her own terms. Best wishes always Hayley!
