ESPN Has Hit “Rock” Bottom
They aired the USA Rock Paper Scissors Championship last weekend
I wish I was kidding, but sadly, I am not. ESPN can’t give the most popular Olympic sport the time of day, but the higher-ups in the executive offices (specifically, ESPN programming and acquisitions director Ilan Ben-Hanan) thought the USA Rock Paper Scissors Championships would be a big ratings draw? Say what?
After they ventured into the world of the National Spelling Bee, the annual Nathan’s hot dog battle, and World Series of Poker, I thought it couldn’t get any worse. Boy, was I wrong!
The second annual national championship tournament, sponsored by Bud Light, went down in Vegas on May 12 and 13 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. Finalists will secure a spot at the tourney by winning a local qualifying contest in 325 regional markets; the ultimate winner will take home $50,000. They have a league too.
It is a sad, sad day in the sports world, folks.

That is so pathetic. I really can’t believe this! What jerks!
Okay, i registered so i could tell this story. As you may know, I went to wolverine swim camp and i was there on the 4th of july when they had the hot dog eating contest on television. the whole day, the camp was buzzing with excitement and i overheard conversations about “oh yes, kobyashi (w/e) won last year and holds the world record at 9325098325 hot dogs” and then at lunch people were watching it on tv in the cafeteria, and people were SCREAMING about eating…we all do it, dont we? and i thought to myself…”this is SWIM camp, and i doubt these people would get half this excited if swimming was on tv” and i agree, it is a sad day in the sports world (okay, i’m done)
Wow. Just, wow.
I saw a little bit of this. And thought it was a joke. It wasn’t a joke? People were really serious about this?
Wow.
seriously? rock paper scissors competition? what the HECK? ESPN needs less crap coverage on non real sports and concentrate on some real ones. They could cut out a few hours a year of their baseball coverage and give some to some other sports.
How the hell do you even prepare for a rock paper scissors competition?
I just listened to a guy on ESPN go on and on about how lame soccer is and how David Beckham won’t lift soccer’s status, and that made me upset. I do like soccer, but I’m not really one to watch it for three hours at a time, but it just showed me how closed minded some people can be. It’s really a shame that some sports only get their moment in time every four years.
I know a guy at ESPN and he will soon receive my complaint.
